Gallery – Hubertusbad
Hubertusbad is located in Lichtenberg, Berlin. Formerly it was a public baths containing separate mens’ and womens’ pools, saunas, medical baths and a sun deck. Originally opened in 1928, the building was in use until 1991 when it closed requiring repair, for which there was a lack of funds.
The smaller women’s pool was 20m length and is now filled over with wooden flooring to make a gallery and events space. At the time of visiting (October 2024) much of the original 25m Men’s pool, changing facilities, and baths remain untouched. I really hope they remain this way and are not developed into a modern nightclub or some such.
Individual changing cabins are located around the perimeter of the pools on two levels. They are entered from a rear corridor (boot gang). Each cabin has a slate tablet where the entry time was noted by staff. Once changed you exited the front door to the wet side. In addition there was an open dressing area that was used by groups – students and swimming clubs.
In the upstairs section there are 68 bathing cabins with an enamel bath tub in each one. People who did not have a shower or bathtub at home could wash here. There is also a viewing gallery for watching events in the main pool.
The Russian-Roman baths contained a sauna, steam and a cold plunge pool as well as massage rooms. The architecture and design of this part of the building is particularly interesting.
The basement was home to the machinery for cleansing the water, but also there were a number of small businesses here offering hairdressing, barbering and other wellbeing treatments.
